Police have cordoned off a street in Tauranga after a hand grenade was found beneath the floorboards of an old house.

The house on Harvey St was being renovated when the World War II hand grenade was found this afternoon.

Northern Communications shift commander Danny Meade says some neighbouring residents on the street have been evacuated from their homes for safety reasons.

"It's not unusual for these types of things to turn up, but we always err on the side of caution," he says.

The bomb squad from Auckland has been sent to the scene and they're expected to arrive at the house on Harvey St to inspect the grenade around 6pm.
