The duelling serial killers on Dexter and a mother with split personalities on United States of Tara won Golden Globes on Sunday, making it a big night for the Showtime pay cable network.

Michael C Hall won for best actor in a TV drama and John Lithgow won a supporting actor award for their work in Dexter. Both play murderers matching wits in the bloody Showtime series.

"I've had the most wonderful time creeping out the entire country for the last six months," said Lithgow, who was featured on the series this season.

Hall, who is undergoing treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma, wore a wool cap as he accepted his award. He did not mention his illness.

The Golden Globe could give a burst of attention to Collette's series, United States of Tara - at least, that was her expressed hope.
