Boxing Day sales across the country were up 6.9 percent on last year, according to data from EFTPOS operator Paymark.
Over $105 million was spent as Kiwis took advantage of Boxing Day sales.
“Every year you’re going to get a group of people who always come out in force for the Boxing Day sales and this year they certainly have," says Paymark head of sales and marketing Paul Whiston.
"The growth is not as high as we saw a few years back, which suggests perhaps that we’ve found a level of stability in the wider Christmas shopping period.
“Growth of 6.9 per cent across the country is a good positive end to the year for retailers however."
The highest growth year-on-year was recorded in Otago – sales there were up 12.3 percent. It was a different story in Gisborne, which saw sales drop 4.3 percent.
The quake-hit Canterbury region posted a positive 7.7 percent increase.
