A young boy accidentally occupied Dunedin’s Octagon yesterday after getting his leg caught between iron railings.
Seven-year-old Saxon Parry became trapped after pushing his knee through a space in metal railings overlooking the Octagon and had to be rescued by firefighters.
The Fire Service was called shortly after 3pm, following a 20-minute attempt to free Saxon’s leg. Dozens of cruise ship passengers and a few Occupy Dunedin protesters applauded as the boy was freed.
Mother Natalie Parry says Saxon was “really good”, while she feared the worst.
“I thought they would have to get a saw... he had lodged it in there pretty hard,” she told the Otago Daily Times.
She says Saxon’s wait to be freed was made a bit easier by offers of hot chocolate and cake from Occupy Dunedin protestors.
Twenty minutes after the Fire Service arrived, a tool called the “spreader” was used to push the iron bars far enough apart for Saxon to pull his leg out.
He was not injured in the incident.
