Taika Watiti’s Boy has won the 2010 Audience Award for Fiction Feature Film at the Sydney Film Festival.

It is the first time in 20 years a New Zealand film has won the award – the last time was An Angel at My Table in 1990.

“It’s awesome to see the Aussies embracing Boy so early on,” says Film3 critic Kate Rodger. “It bodes well for the film’s box office success beyond our shores. Choice!”

Boy opens in Australia on general release in August. It is still playing at cinemas around New Zealand and has made nearly $9 million at the box office here in the 13 weeks since its release.
