Eight people were arrested, 123 unsafe cars ordered
off the road and 15 impounded following a boyracer meeting in
Christchurch at the weekend, as police say boyracers are returning to
"cruising" the city's streets.
The annual 4&Rotary South
Island Champs were held in the city at the weekend and police said they
were disappointed with the anti-social behaviour surrounding the event.
Large
numbers of vehicles gathering to commit traffic offences in both
residential and industrial areas, said Canterbury road policing manager
Inspector Al Stewart.
"The behaviour is absolutely unacceptable.
Fortunately we had extra staff rostered on to deal with the anticipated
disorder and offending."
At one spot about 1000 people gathered and it took police two hours to disperse them.
Fifteen cars were impounded, some for doing burnouts, and eight people were arrested.
Over
the weekend 123 unsafe vehicles were ordered off the road, which Insp
Stewart said was frustrating, as it showed some drivers were not getting
the message.
Just last week a car that had been ordered off the
road 12 days earlier crashed at Tai Tapu, south of Christchurch, killing
the driver and seriously injuring three passengers, he said.
Insp
Stewart said there was also an increase in boyracer numbers cruising
the city's four main avenues. Christchurch City Council has banned
cruising.
Police would clamp down on cruising, he said.
