The fight erupted in the last minute of a semifinal between Auckland Grammar and Kelston Boys High

Two schoolboy teams have to front up to the Auckland Rugby Union tomorrow and explain how a match between them degenerated into a brawl on Saturday.

Players and up to 100 spectators were caught up in the fight, which erupted in the last minute of a secondary schools semifinal between Auckland Grammar and Kelston Boys' High on Saturday.

The fight, after a last-minute Grammar try sealed a 20-9 victory for the school, lasted five minutes and led to at least one schoolboy being knocked out, according to a witness.

The union's disciplinary committee has asked for coaches, managers and captains from both schools to attend the hearing tomorrow evening, as well as an advocate for each team.

The committee will listen to both sides of the story, view footage from the game, and study the referee's report.

The teams will be told at the end of the hearing if any penalties are to be imposed.

Because the competition's final, between Auckland Grammar and Mt Albert Grammar, is scheduled for Saturday, any appeal would have to be made before the weekend.

"The secondary school rugby competition is a very competitive one and always has been," said union chief executive Andy Dalton.

"But for that to turn into an all-out brawl involving players and spectators is simply disgraceful.

"The two teams and their schools now face media attention for all the wrong reasons, as well as a judiciary process in a week that one team should have been looking forward to playing their school rugby final at Eden Park."

Firstly their is two sides to every story and i feel the media portray Kelston in a negative light. Just because Kelston lost the match and the fight occured, it's immediately assumed that we instigated the fight because we couldn't handle defeat. Which I find to be completely false, and the reasons for why our players started fighting is not my business to reveal, but is a legitimate reason and one that has alot of weight.

I am not going to point fingers at whoever did instigate the fight, but secondly this has been blown out of proportion. These things happen from time to time and boys have alot of testosterone to burn. Had that camera not been their, the situation would not have escalated to the point where it is at now.

Thirdly, with the spectators, although it should have been left to the ref to handle the situation I feel they were honourable in their intentions. It shows the Brotherhood and closeness of all Kelstonians past and present. Had I been there myself, no doubt in my mind I would have been in their with my sleeves up giving them some. I don't condone violence but when your mates are in trouble, it's human nature to want to help them.

All in all, I believe Kelston isn't the true villain here and both schools should deal with this within their school gates in conjunction with the Auckland judiciary. And everybody should leave it at that and move forward.

Kelston for Life!!!

Wats is that I wonder!! Wats a fight that is just part of it too bad there was no TV3 to tape the game or the All Black Coach. They shake hands at the end so leave it alone. What goes on the field stays on the field. TV3 was not there at the after match GRAMMER vs KBHS the boys were together eating n talking. And for the mum that was trying to break the fight WELL DONE!! For the KELSTON PRINCIPLE talking about Racist I quess he didn't hear wat the Kelston Supporters calling the GRAMMER BOYS.
