Bret McKenzie makes honours list

Comedian and Oscar-winner Bret McKenzie can add being made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit to his long list of accolades.

  • See the complete Queen's Birthday Honours list

The Wellingtonian, half of musical comedy duo Flight of the Conchords along with Jemaine Clement, said he was both surprised and honoured to make the Queen's Birthday Honours list for services to music and film.

"I was amazed when I got the news," McKenzie told NZ Newswire.

"I can't wait to see the uniform. Do I get a uniform?"

McKenzie says winning an Oscar for Best Original Song in March for Man or Muppet, which he wrote for the 2011 Muppets movie, has "definitely" been the highlight of his career. He was also the Musical Supervisor on set and wrote four original songs for the film.

McKenzie says life hasn't changed much since he won an Oscar but people constantly ask where he keeps the award.

"If you're wondering, it's currently on top of the piano next to the nappy cream," he said.

Flight of the Conchords took home a Grammy Award in 2007 for their album The Distant Future

The comedy-duo stared in a highly acclaimed self-titled television show that ran for two series on HBO.

McKenzie, his publicist wife Hannah Clarke, and their two children divide their time between Los Angeles, New York and Wellington.

Other creative types to be honoured include pianist Michael Houston and writer Owen Marshall who are both made Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Contemporary artist Shane Cotton and writer and Te Araroa trail founder Geoff Chapple both become officers of the order and Exponents frontman Jordan Luck is made a member.
