Bret McKenzie, one half of New Zealand comedy duo Flight of the Conchords, has been cast as an elf in The Hobbit movies.

McKenzie will play Lindir, an elf of Rivendell, in Sir Peter Jackson's two-film prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, US-based Variety magazine reported.

The comedian made brief appearances as an extra in the first and third Lord of the Rings films.

The Hobbit movies - also starring Martin Freeman, Andy Serkis, Elijah Wood, Sir Ian McKellen and Cate Blanchett - will be shot at various locations around New Zealand over the next 14 months.
