If you were strolling along the Wellington waterfront this afternoon, you may have wondered why twenty or so brides came sprinting, or walking and panting past you.

It was not a protest against the monogamous establishment or a mass wedding gone wrong, it was a race to win an all-expenses paid dream wedding and honeymoon worth $30,000.

The competition was organised by radio station More FM and breakfast host Justin Rae says it was a “gruelling challenge”.

Around twenty brides-to-be lined up outside TSB Arena for the race which included a number of obstacles along the way.

Participants had to throw a bouquet, chow down a piece of wedding cake, skull a glass of bubbly, slip a garter on, sign a pseudo wedding certificate and then piggy-back their partners across the finish line of the waterfront course.

The winner was Maxine Yee and her partner Dean Wawatai.

They now have only 15 days until their dream wedding, which has been planned for them and they will walk down the aisle on October 7, the day before the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals.
