One of the most problematic buildings in Christchurch is the Hotel Grand Chancellor, but just as difficult to work with is the Clarendon Tower.
According to Smith, Crane & Construction, the company tasked with making the tower safe, the building currently meets only 30 percent of the building code and staff are working under remarkable conditions to bring the building down.
There are countless safety checks to tick off every day.
A crane carries a man-cage 15 floors up the face of the tower, making around 30 trips a day.
Sarah McCarthy is tasked with sorting through the files left behind by legal firms.
“It’s mainly documents, wills, court cases things like that, there’s a lot of furniture in there aswell,” says Ms McCarthy.
Once the inside is cleared, the Clarendon Tower will be stripped and deconstructed, it is due to complete demolition another year on from today, February 22, 2013.
