British health officials have temporarily suspended a vaccination program in an English city after a 14-year-old girl died a few hours after being vaccinated against the virus that causes cervical cancer.

Natalie Morton died in a hospital, a few hours after being the given the Cervarix vaccine, which protects against two strains of the human papilloma virus that causes cervical cancer.

There are no indications of any link between Morton's death and the vaccine - administered at her school in Coventry - although Morton appeared to be healthy before being given the shot. An autopsy will be carried out to determine a cause of death.

Meanwhile, the US Food and Drug Administration has delayed a decision on whether to approve Cervarix. A decision on the vaccine was expected Tuesday. But GlaxoSmithKline UK, which manufactures Cervarix, said the death in Britain did not influence the FDA's decision to extend its review.

The National Health Service in Coventry said it stopped the vaccination program for two days to give staff administering the vaccine training in how to answer questions from anyone concerned about its safety.

"We fully expect to resume the program in the coming days," the health authority said in a statement.

Morton fell ill at the school and later died, according to Caron Grainger, the director for public health at Coventry City Council. The vaccine consists of three injections given over a six-month period, and it had been Morton's first shot. The council declined to give any further details of the death.

Health officials also said they quarantined the batch of vaccine given at the school. The school principal, Julie Roberts, said a few other girls also reported being unwell after receiving the vaccine and some were sent home.

The state-run National Health Service began offering the Cervarix vaccine to teenage girls last year, and more than 1.4 million doses of the vaccine have been given out so far under the program. The virus is often transmitted through sexual intercourse and authorities wanted to give the vaccine to girls as young as 13 so they are protected by the time they become sexually active.

The cervical cancer vaccine is routinely administered to millions of young girls across Europe and North America. No safety concerns about the vaccines have been raised elsewhere.

"As with any medical intervention ... one can, on rare occasions, see tragic consequences," said Professor Malcolm McCrae, virologist at the University of Warwick. "But overall this is an extremely well tested vaccine which has been produced in response to a critical health issue - cervical cancer - a disease responsible for almost 1,000 deaths annually in the UK."

Dr. Pim Kon, medical director at GlaxoSmithKline UK, said in a statement that the company is working with the Health Department and health regulators to investigate the case and that the exact cause of death was not yet known.

The statement added that the majority of suspected adverse reaction to the Ceravix vaccine so far have related "either to the signs and symptoms of recognised side effects listed in the product information or were due to the injection process and not the vaccine itself."

GlaxoSmithKline shares were down 0.68 percent at 1,243 pence (US$19.78) on the London Stock Exchange late Tuesday.

The cervical cancer vaccination program sparked controversy in Britain when it was first introduced. Some critics argued it would encourage girls to become sexually active at a younger age.

Morton's death comes as doctors begin to give children a vaccine against swine flu in a clinical trial. Doctors across England have begun administering one of two vaccines to 1,000 children between the ages of six months and 12 years. One of the vaccines is administered by GlaxoSmithKline and the other by Baxter. The trial aims to see which one is most effective on children.

the story of Natalie is the proof that sometimes the vaccine can give 100% guarantee from the future cancer. The other unlucky girls are still to be afraid of a cervix cancer, aren't they?

Would it really matter if parents decided to not Vaccinate there child at this time! Would they die from it? Parents! Did you die from not having Gardasil?

Lisa, on the off chance that you return here and are still worried there has been a study looking at the safety of Gardasil in the real population. Essentially the statistics of harm caused by the vaccine were compared to the incidence in the normal population and found to be the same. ie the chances of an adverse event are the same whether you take the vaccine or not. Google "gardasil post licensure safety study"

I to as a mother is faced with this decision. My daughter is now 11 years old and she has been to the doctor. I would like to know if u think it is safe. I have discuss this with our doctor and she explained it to me and my daughter. My daughter and I would like to have it but my husband has been on line and have these stories. What are we to do? She goes to her doctor next week. I would like to get some feed back on this issue.

As 3news does not seem to have covered it Natalie actually died of a malignant chest tumour, the vaccine was not involved.

Merck's pre-licensure clinical trials for their HPV vaccine, Gardasil, were methodologically flawed. Merck used a potentially reactive aluminum containing placebo to mask the magnitude of the Gardasil's reactivity. It appears that only about 900 pre-adolescent girls participated in the clinical trials. Merck and the FDA know nothing about the ability of Gardasil to cause long term health problems, particularly autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, in young girls.
Yeah right, when Thalidomide was prescribed for morning sickness in the 1960's, it was declared safe and effective. Who are you going to call when you are born with no limbs?
The Centre for Disease Control's recommendation for universal use of HPV vaccine by all pre-adolescent girls is purely a profit-making enterprise for Merck's shareholders and it is a major long-term potential health risk for little girls, who may or may not ever become HPV infected. And, if a girl does become HPV infected after becoming sexually active when she gets older, she will have a very low risk of becoming chronically HPV infected. And if she does become chronically HPV infected, she will have an even lower risk of developing cervical cancer unless she fails to get regular pap smears. Because of routine pap screening, there has been a 75 percent decline in cervical cancer since the 1950's. Cervical cancer now accounts for only a tiny percentage of all cancers in NZ women. Try giving folic acid!
Spending millions of dollars to vaccinate every pre-adolescent girl in New Zealand with an HPV vaccine which has not been proven to be safe or necessary is ridiculous and stupid. Vaccines have not "saved the world" any more than wars have saved us. It has made a ton of money for those (like drug based psychiatry) who have participated in this fraudulent and shameful part of medical practice. Bird flu - the headlines: "where will they bury us all" Swine flu - another hoax. HPV vaccine? where does all this madness end?

While all concerns are valid, lets try remember that the vaccine this young girl recieved is DIFFERENT to the one being administered to NZ's young women. Additionally with every health precaution we take there is a risk that it could cause severe illness or death, NOTHING is 100% safe (not even paracetamol for a few unfortunate people)unfortunatly for this young girl the Cervarix vaccine was possibly a factor in hers.

Has anyone considered how angry their daughter may be with them should she not be allowed to recieve the vaccine and later develops cervical cancer that may have been prevented? Overian cysts can be treated and overcome, hysterectomies can't.

Great comment Julie. Gardasil was touted to be "God's Gift to Women" by the manufacturer. It's definately proving to be something God wouldn't be happy to have His name on.

Typically, authorities are trying to minimise collateral damage by stating that “There are no indications of any link between Morton's death and the vaccine” meanwhile stopping the programme for days while “training (staff) in how to answer questions from anyone concerned about its safety”. I’m amused. Two days to answer a simple question about vaccination safety? Surely if the research is sound, the answer to a question regarding a vaccinations safety is simply to distribute the research?

What concerns me the most are the unknowns the Ministry of Health has decided to overlook before making decisions whether to pump the product into our unsuspecting teens. Hilary Butler in her book From one Prick to Another comments on an article released by the developer about Gardisil, that is riddled with comments such as,

...about infections that go away “the mechanism of regression remains uncertain” and...

...antibody is “likely” to be the mode of protection against infection induced by the vaccination, although “this has yet to be formally established”.

Does anybody else notice the obvious abyss in our knowledge about this virus and the vaccine?

Hi, I have investigated Gardasil thoroughly as we have a daughter. What I uncovered lead me to create the website www.offtheradar.co.nz I have had many parents of girls here in New Zealand contact the site due to significant side effects they have experienced. It is interesting that none of the shocking facts regarding this vaccine have been picked up by mainstream media here in New Zealand. Dr Diane Harper who headed the clinical trials for Gardasil asked Dr Alison Roberts of our Ministry of Health, in a Radio NZ interview back in August 08, not to proceed with the vaccine programme in schools here. Dr Harper said she was concerned over safety issues and also misleading reports of it being a cervical cancer vaccine, which she said it is not. Dr Roberts of MoH said they were proceeding with the programme. Dr Harper is one of the few "credible" experts and I feel our government should have listened to her. Many girls no longer get their period and/or have had ovarian cysts after Gardasil. Only time will tell if Gardasil has rendered them sterile. No tests were carried out in this area or on the age girls are being vaccinated here. In ten years time our government may have to face the music and they can't use the excuse they were not aware of these issues, as the Radio NZ interview of Aug 08, clearly shows our Ministry of Health was warned, however chose to ignore credible expert advice
