New Zealand has its first medal of the 2012 London Paralympic Games with a bronze on the velodrome on the opening day of competition.

Fiona Southorn has opened our medal tally with a bronze in the C5 Womens pursuit, behind Great Britain and Poland.

The Tokoroa born, Northland-based real estate agent's competing in her third Paralympics Games.

And our leading Paralympian has set the bar high in her first crack at this year's games.

Swimmer Sophie Pascoe has broken the world record in the SM-10 Women’s 200 metres individual medley heats.

The defending champion's time of 2m28s73 was six tenths of a second under the old mark – a hot favourite for the final later this morning.
