Immigration New Zealand is warning brothel owners that anyone caught renting rooms to foreign prostitutes during the Rugby World Cup will be prosecuted.

The agency says it has intelligence that some brothel owners may look to rent rooms to overseas sex workers rather than employ them directly, in an attempt to get around immigration laws.

People are not allowed to come into New Zealand intending to work as a prostitute, and those on temporary visas are not allowed to work here at all.

Immigration NZ says people found renting rooms to prostitutes will be charged with “aiding and abetting”, punishable by up to seven years in prison.

The RWC organisers have probably told immigration to make it illegal because it is too difficult to ensure they get their cut of the profits.
