Two polls released today have Len Brown well in front of John Banks in the race to become Auckland's super city mayor.

Mr Brown, the Manukau Mayor, had a substantial lead over Mr Banks among those who have already voted and those who have yet to do so in a Horizon poll.

Of those who had voted, Mr Brown led by 56 percent to 22 percent, the Horizon website says. The figures are 40 percent and 18 percent among those yet to vote.

Conservative candidate Colin Craig was third with 11 percent support of those who had already voted and 8 percent of those who had not.

The poll of 307 who had already voted has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.6 percent. The poll of 356 who have yet to vote had a margin of error of plus or minus 5.2 percent.

As well as being ahead in Manukau, Mr Brown also led in Franklin, Waitakere, Papakura and even Auckland City, where Mr Banks is currently the mayor.

Mr Banks was ahead in Rodney district and the race was close in North Shore, the poll said.

Polling also showed Mr Banks was only marginally ahead among National Party supporters who had already voted (38 percent to 36 percent), and behind among National Party supporters who had yet to vote (29 percent to 35 percent).

Meanwhile, Mr Brown had 56 percent support in a Herald on Sunday-Phoenix Poll of 893 Aucklanders who had already voted or said they would definitely or probably vote.

Mr Banks had 33 percent support, but he said his own polling showed the vote was close.

The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percent.

Postal votes must be mailed in by Wednesday but votes can be handed into libraries by noon on Saturday.

i am glad to say that my siblings and i have already for voted for Len Brown (4 votes total)... AND NO .. we do not live in the South Auckland ( we all reside in the central auckland) but John Banks outburst and derogatory comments of late made us realise that he just aint cut out to lead this multi cultural and vibrant city of ours. All the best Mr Len Brown and may you win with a decisive majority.

Can't imagine why anyone would vote for Banks whose reputation as a political bully and a loud mouth shallow thinking talk back "host" certainly doesn't give him credibility as the Mayor of an "international city of culture". He certainly hasn't done anything to build Auckland's reputation or infrastructure during his term as mayor.

Some of you people are so dumb, how is SA social issues going to spread? You know the Manukau City Council has overseen the development of the now "East Auckland". How about we build an Airport at Whenuapai and shift new PI immigrants to the North Shore, wouldn't you bigots like that?. In terms of crime stats I'm pretty sure Central Auckland has the highest even when the largest police district in Counties Manukau has been under resourced in years.

Vote for Colin Craig get some fresh blood in to run Auckland, someone who can think outside the square. Why should it be a 2 person race. Len Brown seems like a nice guy but maybe he should take some time out - go and look after you wife and yourself for a while. Banks is a politician and seems to only see one way.

@ Matthew - Why is Len good for south auckland and not the rest of 'us'. Who is 'us'?? This is not a vote on 'us' vs. them - it's on policy. I live in one of your listed 'us' areas and I fullly support Len Brown. I believe that Auckland needs an inclusive leader to bring the diverse communities of Auckland together. Unlike you I do not have a 'xenophobic' view of South Auckland.

Len is best fit for Mayor and I believe has the best transport policy. His focus on public transport [Rapid Transit] is needed in Auckland to aid in reducing congestion, with a rail link to the airport as a key project.

Auckland deserves a far left leaning Nanny Mayor. You get what you vote for, and it seems too many are out drinking their lata's to even bother voting. You will all be choking on them when that idiot Brown becomes your mayor.

Having lived in Auckland I would hate to see brown do what he has done for south auckland for the rest. It is a mess there, and Auckland should be very worried about that kind of mess spreading throughout the district under this man.

Disappointing to see people vote for him. Hes a nice guy and all but hes not fit for the role, he just like Dick Hubbard. Nice guy, 'inclusive' but not a leader. He'll be run out of office just like Hubbard. its sad that the Mayor will be dictated mostly by south Auckland. Brown should be standing for Councillor, hes good for south Auckland but not for the rest of us. Rodney, North Shore and Auckland Get Your Votes In!
