Pupils at Burnside used a Facebook page to target their headteacher

Pupils from Christchurch's Burnside School are facing disciplinary action following posting defamatory remarks about their headteacher on a dedicated Facebook page. Do they deserve to be punished or is this just schoolyard humour?

Hi John, very disturbed about the 15% gst along with every friend I talk to. the poor are already suffering, the middle class will possibly agree until they suffer, it may be the death knell for National..the inflation rate for food, petrol and power is already hurting people. They moan about the quality of food as well as the price and the efFect of this gst could ultimately hurt business more as people tighten their belts.. Not a good move..

@ a.me: Imagine if (years from now) your new boss walked into the office and told you that you can't do this or that any longer, because THEY were in charge now.... Get the picture?

@ Addy: The reason they have it stuck in their heads that they are superior to you is because THEY ARE. You don't have to respect them if you don't want to, but you can't be openly DISRESPECTFUL. Believe me, thats how it is in the real world, and anyone who tells you otherwise is a liar.

I know several teachers from schools in Chch, and from what I have heard I would suggest that these comments are typical not only of BHS students, but of teenagers in general. I would suggest that these conceited, obnoxious little brats are the products of overindulgent parents, and a society that has taught them all about their rights, but done nothing to inform them of their responsibilities.

I recently watched a documentary made by Chris Rock called "Good hair". Watching your clip on straightening hair, reaffirms my belief of just how much media influences our image of self. Like Chris Rock, my daughter is constantly wanting to straighten her hair, because her own hair is not good enough. She is 9 years old.

Imagine someone walking into your house, and telling you that you can't do this or that any longer, because THEY were in charge now. How do you think that would feel? Not having a say, not being informed of these changes, and not given time to adjust? I think this generalisation on BHS is just absolute rubbish. "Typical teenage speak." Of about 2,000 students attending BHS, less than 300 became a member of this GROUP [NOT a WEBSITE]. What does this tell you? As a student, at this school, I would like to say that making form time longer solve anything. Cutting music is like destroying your soul, or getting castrated. Making students wait for their student diaries, when seniors especically, have truckloads of homework, is unacceptable. We students, have to pay for these things, if not us, our parents. So what's the point, if they're made compulsary, and then aren't delievered on time? Why should we have to pay the full price? No one said that change is bad, but it's the way you go about making those changes - and making sure that they are absolutely neccesary.

An easy problem to fix. all those who don't like being at the school should leave or go to another school, if there was a mass exodus then obviously there is something wrong. I think kids these days are real wimps and wingers. I have just finished reading a book about about one of my fathers comrades in the air force who was shot down and killed during WW2. He had just turned 21 when he was killed. The eldest member of his crew was 24 and the youngest 19. looking at photographs of them they looked far more mature than similar aged young men today. Mind you there was corporal punishment in those days and that tended to toughen us up. Compare the crime rate then with the crime rate now to see the difference in the caliber of people society is producing.

When I saw the article on the news and Campbell Live I my first thought was, "is that my old high school principle that they're talking about?", because, it just didn't sound like the same principle that I had all throughout high school. Those Burnside students are used to having it too easy; with mufti all throughout 7th form etc. We just had the occasional mufti day when I was at high school (which was only 12 years ago). Besides, uniforms are there to show that you belong, that you are a part of something e.g. NZ Sports Teams, Emergency Services, High Schools. It is a privilege for students to wear street clothes during the hours of school time not their right.

I'm a student at BHS. So i know alot more about the school than most of these people leaving comments. I know for a fact that even if we approached the teachers at the school explaining our disappiontment in the changes - they wouldn't of listened. They never do. They have it stuck in their heads that they're superior and that we have to repsect them, not realizing that they have to respect us as well. They treat us like 5 year olds - not adults. They're always b*tching about how we're at high school to learn - and nothing else. but how are we supposed to learn in an environment that isn' fun?. It's a horrible school to be in. I went onto the page when it was put in the press and there were actually 40 year old cougers with nothing else to do that they resorted to blatantly bullying 15 year olds. They were being absolutely horrible- not just to the creator of the group but the whole student body! It's totally unnecassary. The only good thing about this is totally pushing the whole situation completely overboard so we get an episode in South Park. So to the media and everyone so upset by this that they're giving us hateful comments? We salute you, you're only making our new set task easier.
