A well-known Christchurch businessman has been granted interim name suppression on firearms charges at the Christchurch District Court, after an armed call-out near Kaiapoi last week.

The suppression was granted at his request by a registrar, and he was remanded on bail to appear in the Rangiora District Court on January 27.

He faces two charges of unlawfully carrying or possessing firearms after the armed offenders' squad was called to the incident in which gunshots were reported, about 8.30am on Friday.

It resulted in an area being cordoned off until 10am.

The man was arrested about an hour later but was released on police bail to appear in court today.
