Stunned bystanders helped a young mother give birth on the back seat of a car held up in traffic in Auckland on Friday.

The woman's father, who was driving, pulled over in the carpark of a childcare centre inside the Auckland Hospital grounds and shouted for help, the New Zealand Herald reported.

Laraine Josephs, who had stepped outside for a coffee break from the Kids Domain childcare centre, said something along the lines of "don't worry, I've had three kids" and helped 22-year-old Natalie give birth to a baby girl.
