Civil Aviation Authority investigators will this morning make their way to the scene of a fatal glider crash.

Emergency Services reached the crash site around 7pm last night at the Snowy Tops in Omarama.

Rescue Coordination Centre spokesman James Sygrove said the crash was reported about 6.20pm on Wednesday.

A helicopter and a fixed-wing aircraft with glider-towing capability were deployed to search for the glider.

Mr Sygrove said the helicopter was able to land close to the crash site.

A doctor on board confirmed the glider's pilot had died.

Mr Sygrove said the matter will be handed over to police.

Police are notifying the dead pilot's next of kin.
