The Taxi Federation is calling on the Government to make video cameras in taxis compulsory as the hunt continues for the killer of an Auckland cabbie yesterday morning.

Hiren Mohini died after he was stabbed in the neck and torso and his cab crashed into a tree in Mt Eden.

Taxi Federation executive director Tim Reddish says he asked Transport Minister Steven Joyce to make video cameras compulsory when a taxi driver was killed in Christchurch, just over a year ago.

Mr Reddish says the cameras cost about $2,000 each - he says if the Government doesn't make them compulsory, taxi companies won't install them.

He says they have been proven to improve safety since being installed in all cabs in Western Australia.

Camera's won't stop these scum from killing, what is needed is the same as in Sydney Taxi's, a screen around the driver. I thought Politicians travelled the world getting idea's, but it appears the only idea's the get is what type of suit they will buy or what fragrance they will get for their mistress.

Why should the government have to pay for them when every other business has to pay for their own security.

What is stopping taxi companies installing cameras??? why do they have to call on the Govt, surely it is an issue of choice we didnt have to get govt approval before installing camera in our place of work, and some taxis ive been in have them installed, just do it!!!
