Cadbury has confirmed the proposed closure of its West Auckland factory is part of an efficiency drive.

The closure means 200 jobs will go at the Avondale site in the next two years.

The Service and Food Workers Union has criticised the decision saying Cadbury is putting market returns ahead of workers' jobs.

But Cadbury New Zealand says the closure is necessary if the company is to remain competitive.

SFWU spokesperson Jill Ovens says unions will meet with Cadbury next weeks to discuss the options.

Rita, get real.If a employer cant make a profit how the hell is he going to continue in business.Unlike the welfare state of NZ which just keeps raising taxes for funds, a manufacturer needs profitable sales to pay its expenses, and have some $$$ left over to keep trading. Or dont you understand this simple arithmetic? we need a real govt for NZ,one that understands business and the prosperity that follows

I just saw on the news that Cadbury may not only shut down its factory in Avondale, but also move some of its plant to China! All the bad press that China has been getting lately, it seems like not such a good idea. Buy NZ made!
