Coffee suppliers are warning the price we pay for our café coffee is set to rise by up to 20c before Christmas.
Some cafe owners are predicting five dollars will be the cost of your caffeine hit by that time.
With coffee prices, milk and overheads all going up, those in the supply chain agree the price you currently pay probably will not hold for long.
Mojo is on of the biggest coffee suppliers and retailers in the country.
It is planning to increase the price it charges for a cup of coffee by up to 20c by the end of the year.
Mojo marketing manager James O’Connell-Cooper says café owners are paying up to 50% more than last year for some supplies.
“There doesn’t seem to be any end in sight for it”, says O’Connell-Cooper. “So the effect is we have to put our prices up.”
Emporio co-owner Eric Heycoop says prices could rise by even more.
“I’m not a gambler but I’d say if things keep going the way they are, a five dollar coffee before Christmas would be a fair call,” says Heycoop.
Mr Heycoop has had to come up with new ideas to slow the cost-effect on customers.
“We're pushing porcelain a lot more, just to try and cut down on the takeaway cups.
“I think we might see the emergence of filter coffee coming back in, a little bit like the US style, where it might be three dollars a take-out,” he says.
