I train in MMA and its amazing to see the atmosphere in both the gym and in competition. It's not about being barbaric at all, everyone is very friendly and positive, all the "tough guys" gain respect pretty quickly and there is a genuinely supportive culture within the sport. I have become really good friends with both my training partners and also the people that I have fought in the ring which shows the level of respect that the sport has. Its easy to think that it is a brutal sport, but I think that its just because the martial arts takes place within a cage. I would definitely recommend that people give it a go for both fitness, but also for the competition side of things.
