Tauranga's mayor is welcoming calls for an independent inquiry into the grounding of the Rena cargo ship.

The Green Party is suggesting the move to ensure similar incidents don't happen again.

Mayor Stuart Crosby says maritime safety in New Zealand should be investigated, so that lessons can be learned.

However, he says he's impressed by the salvors' efforts.

Divers have finally been able to take to the water today, to see if the broken and partly submerged ship is still securely wedged on Astrolabe reef.

Sadly the only way to help stop this happening again (anywhere) is for the public to stop demanding cheap goods, which means cheap freight, which means slack safety, tough timetables, cheap crews and shortcuts to keep cost low. And that isn't likely to happen anytime soon!

oh grow a brain, it grounded because of the crew, no inquiry can change an irresponsible captain.
