A high-powered global union is calling for the Ports of Auckland board to be sacked.

The International Transport Workers' Federation is slamming the port authority's decision to lock out wharfies, labelling it "unbelievable, unlawful and practically suicidal".

In a statement from the union's London headquarters, ITF president Paddy Crumlin is calling for Auckland Mayor Len Brown and the council to step in to resolve the dispute.

Wharfies have been issued with an indefinite lockout notice this week, which prompted the Maritime Union to file an injunction to declare the move unlawful.

In what way is this union "high powered"? What actual power do they have? Poor choice of wording and a highly dubious assumption.

I don't know why more minimum wage earners don't join unions. It's the only way they will ever get better pay and work conditions out of their greedy competitive bosses.

Without big strong unions the rich will keep getting richer and the poor will keep getting poorer. I can't see any other way of reversing this trend.

If your not blessed with brains then you need to be part of a collective to ensure you don't get screwed by those who are. Simple really.

A global union supporting discrimination in the work place, petty tyrants, bullying? No surprise. They also support it costing NZ money as cost to NZ, flow thru to the backbone of Global Union support - the EU.

Ever wondered why they are so happy to support stiring outside their own pot? Well if they raise costs eleswhere it helps protect their own protected pot. The EU has the most restraint on trade to outsiders in the world, hence we have much better dealing with China and the USA than the EU. Outside the UK where we have agreements going back to WWII era, the EU is locked up tighter than a bank vault after hours to us. The EU also pours funds anywhere it can to help fuel any problem outside the EU. Eg their support of greens globally to do much the same stuffing up factor as global unions.

The EU doesn't care about anyone but the EU - eg their trade restrictions which are the worst in the world. We can trade places like USSR (previously) or North Korea today easier (with trade sanctions in place) than the EU outside the UK!

well the initial statement of "A high-powered global union is calling for the Ports of Auckland board to be sacked"

Heehee, 'Global union'..umm same global union that The Hobbit gave Helen Kelly a slap in the face?...looks like Kelly will get another with MUNZ defeat, how delicious and deserving and I guess her response will be "The National Govt are against unions"...even although Labour leader and Govt. have had no input...OK save Shearers 'wild animals' in Fenton and any other List MP that needs/wants plublicity!

This is absolutely a great thing to watch, the left unionists sinking down and down and Labour not backing them...ohhh how georgeous.

GO POAL!!!, Kelly and Parsloe have made this dispute so 1950's/1970's that they should, and will, know NZ public has moved on from the horror of union blackmail. And any worker on minimum wage and getting crap from employer..YES, unions can make a difference. BUT! $90K a year warfies (well $25-$45 an hr wharfies), and The Hobbit fiasco putting out of work talented Kiwis....Kelly and Parsloe are now paraiahs, litterly a joke and NZ are not having a bar supporting nor interested...but typical unionist leaders it's about ego and f#ck the workers who are NOT being paid as they call them out on strike...PS, guess who is STILL getting paid full wage during the strike? lol..
