Moviemaker James Cameron can now boast the top two grossing films of all time - only his Titanic has made more at the box office than new movie Avatar.
The sci-fi epic has made over US$1.14 billion globally since its release in December, relegating former number two blockbuster, The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, to third on the all-time money-making list.
Avatar is only the fifth film to make more than US$1 billion at the box office. Cameron's Titanic made US$1.8 billion.
The latest box office news comes as the filmmaker celebrates a nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film at the Directors Guild Awards.
