You would not know it now, but Camp A Low Hum started from humble beginnings.

Word spread quickly about the event though. It made it all the way to the writers of Lonely Planet who dubbed it one of Australasia’s most recognised festivals.

“I'd been a massive fan of the whole scout camp/school camp sort of thing. I was massively obsessed with them,” explains Camp A Low Hum founder Blink. “I just wanted to throw a party for all the friends I'd made - all the people who'd come to my shows. [I] Certainly had no intention of it being a music festival.”

However, a music festival by any other name is still a music festival and with over 100 bands playing over three days and nights it is now a little louder than a hum.

“Everyone all seems really blissed out and everyone always goes home with some very fond memories,” gushes Liam Finn. “Some of the best memories I think of our lives.”

This was particularly true for the Finn family.

None of the bands are announced before camp - least of all the surprise super group made up of Neil, Liam and Elroy Finn. They were just another band happy to have made it along.

“The proudest thing is, you know, they're all paying to be here,” says Blink. “Of the 30 international bands here - which is more international bands than were at Big Day Out or Rhythm and Vines - they've pretty much all paid their own way to come here.”

Despite a bit of questionable head wear and toy throwing, the crowd was mostly made up of happy campers.

“Whoa, [it is an] absolutely fantastic weekend,” says one reveller. “Up there in the top three I’d say… of all time.”

Although this year was the third and final instalment of Camp A Low Hum, the man behind the show promises campers will not be packing up their tents permanently.

Blink is sure something will be on offer next year, but he is just not yet sure what.
