The woman who died when the caravan she was travelling in hit a truck in Waikato was reportedly a Canadian tourist travelling around New Zealand with her husband and daughter.

In a moment of confusion the woman's husband, who was driving the family's hired campervan, pulled out onto State Highway 3 from Waitomo Caves Rd, near Waitomo, thinking it was a roundabout, the NZ Herald reported.

The caravan collided with a truck at 1.55pm on Thursday.

Two people were injured during the crash but emergency services were unable to confirm whether it was the father, daughter or truck driver.

A witness who lives near the crash site told the newspaper the family had been in New Zealand for a week before the fatal accident.

The Waikato Serious Crash Unit are at the scene and road diversions have been put in place.
