The 59-year-old woman who died when the campervan she was travelling in was hit by a truck in Waikato was a Canadian tourist travelling around New Zealand with her husband and daughter.

The crash, at 1:55pm on Thursday, happened when the woman's husband, who was driving the rented campervan, pulled out onto State Highway 3 from Waitomo Caves Rd, near Waitomo, thinking it was a roundabout.

Sergeant Warren Shaw says the campervan driver made a right turn directly into the path of the truck-and-trailer unit, which had the right of way.

The dead woman was in the front passenger seat. Her husband, 52, and daughter, 24, were taken to Te Kuiti Hospital with minor injuries, the New Zealand Herald reported.

The truck driver was shaken, but unhurt.

Locals have said the intersection is a notorious crash area.
