The Cancer Society is standing by its sunscreen products, despite claims by a Canterbury mother that its lotion failed to work on her son.

Canterbury mother Jo Pattie says her seven-year-old suffered severe sunburn and blistering to his shoulders, even though he was coated in the Cancer Society children's 30-plus sunblock while out swimming.

She says she had re-applied the lotion an hour after the first application.

However Dr Jan Pearson, from the society, says the products meet the Australian-New Zealand sunscreen standard.

"We are quite sure that there is not a quality issue with our product. We weren't there, so we don't know the specifics of the case – how the child applied the sunscreen, or how much."

Dr Pearson says sunscreen should only be used as part of a sun-protection regime.

I have used cancer society sunscreen on my two children as well as rash tops and hats - due to kids drying themselves and playing around sunscreen can be rubbed off.

My kids never play in the sun without tops on or a rash top.

Dont think you can blame a particular product.
