The prospect of strong winds is causing more headaches for residents struggling to deal with the aftermath of yesterday's quake.
It is feared unstable structures could be toppled by strong northwesterly winds, and temporary fixings torn off.
Metservice severe weather forecaster, Mark Pascoe, says gusts of up to 130 kilometres an hour are expected to hit from 9am.
“The areas mostly affected would probably be Banks Peninsula and inland Canterbury but there could be some big gusts around Christchurch as well,” he says.
Mr Pascoe says the news is not getting any better on the weather front, with a cold southerly bringing rain is due to come tomorrow afternoon.
