New Zealand's track cycling coach Tim Carswell is to step down after the Olympics.

Carswell has been snapped up by the sport's governing body, the Union Cycliste Internationale, to be a coach at its headquarters in Aigle, Switzerland.

"It's a fantastic opportunity and we are certainly looking forward to it," said Carswell.

He will be at the national track cycling championship in Invercargill this weekend and says he will stay focused on his job before he and his family move in August.

Carswell, 40, has been in his role with BikeNZ since 2007 and says he feels it's time to move on and is confident his successor will come from within the organisation.

"I know there's an excellent succession programme in place and some great people ready to take more responsibility," he said.

The UCI's World Cycling Centre was set up in 2002 to help develop and train promising cyclists and a number of New Zealanders have been through it.
