Phil Goff's reshuffle has stopped short of really punishing errant MP Chris Carter. Carter has been demoted to number 13, that's just outside the frontbench. Sure he loses his treasured Foreign Affairs portfolio - but as punishment he picks up his other great love, Conservation.

Why? Carter doesn't deserve to be at 13. He doesn't deserve such a plum portfolio. The way he has handled his demotion has been far from impressive. He is still, as I write this, refusing to publicly accept he has done anything wrong.

His statement last night said he accepted Phil Goff's right to demote him. It did not accept any blame or wrongdoing for his many and varied abuses of the taxpayer’s dollar. In short - he's not showing enough contrition.

Goff says that even he's disappointed with the way Carter has handled this. Surely, that's direct criticism from Goff - and it makes me wonder why Carter has kept a senior role. He doesn't deserve it.

I said yesterday and I'll repeat it today - I think Goff's handling of his three errant MPs has been top notch. Goff returned to the country Sunday afternoon and by midday Monday all three had been dumped. He looked decisive and clinical. But Carter looks like he has contempt for his leader by not fronting on this and taking it on the chin. Look at Shane Jones, he's almost overexposed on the apology front.

Anyway the reshuffle has happened as a result of this expenses saga. And as predicted on 3 News last night the two major winners are Charles Chauvel and Nanaia Mahuta.

Both move to the frontbench. On the front bench Maryann Street picks up the Foreign Affairs portfolio and David Parker Economic Development - these are promotions.

On the backbenches the big winner is Grant Robertson. His ranking is still a lowly 20, just one above Shane Jones, but he picks up Tertiary Education. He will be good.

Robertson may well be a future leader. I seriously rate his knowledge of his portfolio areas and his work ethic. I still think Goff wasn't bold enough though. Robertson should go closer to the frontbench. Who cares if he's a first term MP? He's more than capable - more capable than some on the front bench. Stephen Joyce is a first term MP and Minister - is anyone suggesting he's not up to it.

Anyway Goff's got a bigger reshuffle to come later in the year. So there will be changes and he's leaving some room to move.

Goff said yesterday Carter simply travelled too much on the taxpayer, it was too costly and his partner went with him too often.

And that's without mentioning the credit card bills for the mugs, sauna, flowers and magazine racks. It's a long way back for Carter. Too far probably. If he wants to stay in the Labour tent he needs to show contrition and front up - and he may do that this afternoon.

But as I write this I'm seeing no signs of that.

Duncan, you should be rewarded by TV3 for being such a good political editor. Well done! Leave the gay boy off the attention for sometime. I was wondering why he did not loose the Ethnic affairs portfolio. There was no MP from the ethnic caucus are suitable or worthy enough to take the portfolio. Is it again the Ethnic caucus head Mr Carter's failure to uplift the skills of his ethnic caucus members? All the three MP’s in Labour Ethnic Caucus are sitting right at the bottom of the Labour caucus list Mr Huo at 42, Mr Prasad at 43 and Mr Chowdhary at 44. I do not understand why ethnic caucus is performing so poorly. Labour really needs some new, young and energetic ethnic faces rather than old blokes. I would like to request you to do some investigation on the performance of Labour ethnic caucus. Their performance is appalling and not justifiable for taking such kind remuneration. One thing I can assure all the three ethnic caucus are very good in taking advantage of every single photo opportunity other than that they are good for nothing. Why should the taxpayer fund these under performers? I hope you take this matter to Mr Goff's attention.

He has just been slapped with a wet bus ticket. Goff is protecting his laedership. Shane Jones was a threat and could still be one, that is why he was pushed down so far in the pecking order. Still he can always watch pornos!!!

We dont need 120 politicians in this small country.
60 would be more than enough, and really make them work for their money.Over 100,000.00 in pay a year.As a pensioner I get only about a twelve of that to live on.They should shape up or ship out.

It is strange but none of these people seem to be getting the point. It is not their money, it is not the governments money it is in fact the taxpayer's (or ratepayers) money. I know if I buy my partner flowers and send the bill to Carter he will tell me where to go. So why the hell do they think they can book up huge expences to us? There needs to be a reality check in this country. You cannot inflict cutbacks across the board on the public and then make free and easy with our money!

What sort of Dipstick is Chris Carter? He has the benefit of a huge salary, credit card, travel benefits etc........ and he's still not happy......Most people have to jump through hoops to obtain these sort rewards from their employer(s). Chris i'snt that great is he? I'll take his role any old day!!! Hes rude and arrogant and needs to be given an instant dismissal for stealing. No written warnings here buddy!!!

More to the point, Mr Groser's own expense account infractions appear to escaped accountability and scrutiny, Duncan. What about those? Will you be pursuing this, as Groser is an incumbent Cabinet Minister?

Yes, Duncan, but the Welfare Working Group has received nothing like the detailed scrutiny that the expenses scandal ephemera has, despite the worthy exceptions that your own network has dealt with. Can we have more depth and detailed discussion of that issue in future, given this one is on its last legs insofar as newsworthiness goes?

Duncan, a quick question. There are several posts here and on herald site re Bill English claiming housing allowance. As far as I am aware, he is entitled to it, although he maintains 2 homes because he wants his family with him . Am I correct or have I missed the boat on that one?

carter is making the cost of this even greater. im sure this will be another nights headlines on labour and not national. Goff waited days to react costing even more political points. not sending carter to the corner means that nats can use this as ammo at will. all 3 of these guys are cursed and need to join the back of the line.
