Wellington’s hopes of defending the Ranfurly Shield have taken a blow with Bledisloe Cup hero Dan Carter set to start for Canterbury in Saturday’s shield clash in the capital.

The All Blacks ace has been nursing a sore calf after the weekends win over the Wallabies in Sydney, but 3 News understands Carter will be named in the Canterbury team tomorrow.

He will be joined by All Blacks skipper Richie McCaw, in what will be his first challenge for the old log-o-wood, along with tough as teak lock Brad Thorn.

Wellington coach Jamie Joseph will also name his side tomorrow and, in a change of heart, will include most of his All Blacks.
