A new temporary walkway will allow Cantabrians to visit Cathedral Square again

After being closed to the public since February’s Canterbury Earthquake, Cathedral Square is about to be re-opened.

Opening on Saturday and staying open until December 11, there will be a temporary walkway linking the Cashel Mall shopping area and Cathedral Square.

The walkway will allow 300 people an hour to visit the square.

"We know that the Cathedral is a significant landmark for most Cantabrians,'' Roger Sutton, CEO of the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority, told stuff.co.nz.

“The walkway will be open from 9am to 8pm every weekend through to December 11 so I would encourage people to take their time.  There will be plenty of opportunities for everyone to enter the area and we want to avoid long waiting times or big groups gathering in City Mall unnecessarily,” he says.

Mr Sutton has, however, warned that there are still some dangerous areas along the walkway and advises all visitors to carry ID with them when visiting.
