Auckland students have already begun their own rebuild of ChristChurch Cathedral, but with a twist. They’re building it with Lego.
They were part of an enthusiastic turnout at the ‘Britomart Block Benefit’, encouraging Aucklanders to dig deep for the Red Cross.
The University of Auckland architecture students hope their model of the Christchurch cathedral will help make a difference.
“We were given four buckets, so I would say roughly 8,000 legos,” says graduate Janice Au.
But even that wasn't enough - the architects ran out of bricks just before the spire - eerily reminiscent of how the cathedral looks today.
The students are part of non-profit group Architecture for Humanity, which is helping redesign Christchurch's Unlimited High School.
“The school was based in the CBD so it's completely wrecked and they won't be reusing the building,” says Architecture for Humanity founder Alexandra Lee.
Elsewhere around Britomart, people were taking to the air on bikes, and to the streets, to raise money for the Red Cross.
Even the tireless Student Volunteer Army was there to help.
“It's a really cool community feel today. There's heaps of people out and about having a really good time and showing their support for Christchurch,” says the army’s Sam Johnson.
They might be more than 1000 kilometres away, but Aucklanders showed they're willing to put in the hard yards to help.
