Cats and Newborn Babies

Fri, 12 Feb 2010 2:45p.m.

Congratulations you’re pregnant! It is time to start preparing for your new baby and also helping your cat prepare for the new arrival.

Many mums-to-be have a lot to organise for the new baby and generally think about how it will impact their cat or how they will get along once they are nearly due.

Many cats are very susceptible to change, especially in the home environment. A new baby and disruption to everyone’s routine can be very stressful and confusing for your cat.

So, you need to prepare in advance to help the change go smoothly, the last thing any new mum wants is to be worrying if the cat has sprayed in the nursery or is jumping in to the baby’s cot for a nap.

The nursery needs to be equipped in advance and you need to let your cat wander in and out so they can start to see the changes in that room with all the new furniture especially if this was a room they loved to hang out in.

If the nursery was a room where your cat’s litter box used to be it is important you do not move it to its new location straight away or your cat is more than likely to continue using the room as a toilet.

You can even play a CD with the sounds of babies crying which can also help your cat be prepared for the sudden noises that are going to happen.

Once your baby is born, before you bring home your new arrival, it is always good to take home a small blanket with the babies scent on it for your cat to sniff and get used it.

I've worked with animals since I was 13 when I first volunteered at the local rescue centre.

As a head veterinary nurse I've developed a passion for pet training - educating people and their pets with simple positive techniques and showing how to train pets to be an important part of the family.

Recently I set up my own business called Happy Pawes – Positive Pet Training, and I offer training for both cats and dogs.

Check out my blog for hot topics about pet training, and an insight into my day-to-day experiences. I look forward to sharing them with you!
