Cats living in purrfect harmony

3News NZ

I went to a seminar recently and the speaker was trying to find out if, as people, we were a dog or a cat.

If you are someone who loses your temper very quickly with someone during an argument and then forget what it was you were arguing about and don’t hold a grudge you are classed as a dog.

If you are someone who holds a grudge for a couple of days after an argument with someone you are most certainly a cat….

This gives us a great insight in to what happens in a multi-cat household and as kitten season is creeping up many of us will be considering adding a new kitten to our family and hoping that it will be a great playmate for the cat we already have.

We as people make the common mistake of trying to rush the introduction process of the new arrival to our already existing household cat, and hope that in 24 hours our cat and the new addition will be best of mates.

It is important to realise the introduction process, if done correctly, will take numerous weeks and is a very slow process. It takes time and patience on our part to help the cats succeed in being able to tolerate each others' company and live in kitty harmony.

It is important to remember that if an issue arises between cats in the household, once they have had a disagreement they will bare a grudge with each other for at least 2 days, ideally the cats should then be separated for a good four days to get over the argument they have had.

Cats are so interesting and unique and need space and time to unwind from disagreements....so are you a cat or a dog?
