While many schools ban cellphone use because of the threat of bullying, an Education Ministry pilot programme is under way in Auckland where phones are compulsory and used as classroom tools.

E-learning unit manager Howard Baldwin said the ministry would like to see widespread use of the phones but would leave it up to schools to make their own decision.

"We will move away from the pen and paper world," he told the Sunday Star Times.

Professor Noeline Wright, of Waikato University, who is assessing the cellphone pilot programme at Howick College, said schools needed to be extremely vigilant to prevent bullying, theft, and inappropriate texting.

However, she encouraged the use of digital devices, "or Swiss Army communication knives", to prevent schools becoming "islands" of pen and paper use.

"It seems draconian to keep tapping into 20th century technology if 21st century technology seems to work with these kids," she said.

However, an Auckland mother who lost her son to text bullying is appalled that education experts want to see cellphones used for learning.

Daniel Gillies, 16, died after falling from a cliff in 2003, shortly after being subjected to a barrage of hateful texts about his facial disfigurement.

His mother, Helen Algar, said she wanted to see students embrace technology, but some schools had not yet managed to stamp out text bullying.

"My personal preference would be that we don't rely on this technology until we learn from our experiences," she said.

Bring back the slide rule,Take away the calculators, word spell electronic dictionary!s As for cell phones who is the Idiot Who wants them used by students,Not just bullying but at exam times where they can text their mates the answers to questions. It is like store workers they would have no idea how too add up or subtract as the cash registers tell them all they need to know, without the use of their own brain.Education of today if one can use electronic devices they will pass with flying colors,Soon they will replace teachers with robots and end up with the same results, dumb arse kids with electronic brains. As for cell phones in schools it would be the most idiotic idea going.

What the hell is going on in education today? The fools at the ministry seem to be just casting about for ideas then trying (experimenting)them on OUR kids. What genius came up with this stupid idea.... Anyone wanna bet the next step on this road would be that kids just stay at home and wait for a txt to tell them what to study, Then national could close half the schools.... Ohhhhh now i get it!!!!

The idea of making cellphones compulsory in schools is bizarre. These devices are the conduit of the worst forms of bullying in schools, lead to a lot of wasted time, cost parents (and some children) a lot of money, and are likely causing brain tumours in thousands of children. If cellphones are to become compulsory in schools, perhaps smoking should become compulsory in hospitals as well.

A big disaster is waiting from school side if cell phone is allowed. Pl be balance in between ICT and social life. Why don’t you upgrade computer based learning facilities?.

Strange I thought schools were supposed to be about using that tool between your ears I think we are creating a society of dummies. In my day you were not even allowed to use a basic calculator. How many young people these days can do simple mathmatic functions in there head? Its getting to the stage that if an electro magnetic pulse occurs people will just sit in the corner and die because they wont even know how to do the most basic functions without electonic help.
