A man has admitted shooting dead his wife at their home in Central Otago last year.

Warren Bruce Johnston, 67, was due to stand trial for murder next week, but pleaded guilty in the High Court at Dunedin on Thursday, the Otago Daily Times reports.

His wife, Lesley Ann Johnston, was found dead at the couple's home in Roxburgh on March 11 with gunshot wounds in her back.

He was remanded in custody for sentencing on March 9.
