ChCh residents still out in the cold

3News NZ

The snow down south has made for some very pretty pictures today.

School was cancelled, work was off and plenty of you went out and had some fun.

But for others, today was harder than most, especially for those in the eastern suburbs of Christchurch.

Because even though it's been more than a year since the February quake, some residents are now facing a second winter, in the cold.

Watch the video to see the story by Anna Burns-Francis.

thanks Campbell Live for keeping this issue in eyes of the nation, otherwise it's just invisible. Spreading your claim over all the quakes is some sort of sick joke. Add a bit of snow, who cares.

Another Christchurch story: a mother with 5 children is living in a caravan in freezing conditions, about to give birth sometime soon. This is a human rights issue. When are you, John Campbell, going to ask Canterbury Earthquake RECOVERY (?!)Minister Gerry Brownlee what he is doing to help this person and hundreds if not thousands like her? It is unethical for you to use the plight of these people for programme content without completing your moral obligation as an agent of the Fourth Estate to bring those responsible to account.

When EQC first assessed our house following the February earthquake the men did a very thorough job and indicated that the damage to our house was well over the $100,000 cap. Subsequently, Simon from Arrow International, working for AMI, now Southern Response, visited us and painted a completely different picture. He advised that the slumping in the foundation coud be easily repaired with levelling compound and the crack in the plaster ceiling could be repaired by nailing a nice piece of wood over it (very rustic). When I said I wouldn't be happy with that he was horrified and said that meant they would have to "paint the whole ceiling" (shock horror). I asked Simon how the levelling compound would deal with the fact that some of the doors would not open, and all the double glazed windows were now out of square and we were now experiencing really bad condensation on the windows. As a bit of a concessiion he said they would remove the bricks from around the kitchen window and re-lay them. I asked why he thought the hallway wall had moved. He advised it was shonky building and that the builders probably hadn't bolted the bottom plate to the floor. I told him that I doubted that and asked him to lift the carpet. Simon advised they would not lift the carpet and then left. By Sunday I was so angry that I asked my son to help be lift the carpet. After lifting the carpet bar we discovered a 20mm crack right through the foundation which runs all the way through the house under the wall which has moved because of "shonky building practices". Since the first visit Simon returned to look at the crack but we have not heard a thing since that time and can only gird our loins and wait until we have to mount legal action against these ruthless jerks who dare to call themselves human.I believe Grant Cameron is gathering information to start a class action against IAG.

Totally irresponsible of EQC & the Insurance Companies to put these people in this situation. Kiwis are well known to be hard working when it comes to getting jobs done, not anymore! These people have been let down badly. I was in China in 2008 when the Sichuan Province suffered a severe Earthquake. They cleared an area for temporary housing, quickly layed concrete pads, erected Poly insulated walls etc. They didn't stuff around as the aid tents were not sufficient to keep the cold out as all the older housing had been damaged. This shows what can be done if the Government was caring enough. Wake up NZ our people are getting shafted..

It is complete madness that theses people should still be living like this! The problems are more than the solutions for some of them. C'mon now EQC and insurers there needs to be some way to sort this out. I know of insurance companies who will not pay for temporary accommodation anymore as it has run out. I believe each even should retrigger the housing allowance?! Also why do we not re-open shelters for these people in the meantime(bugger the rugby etc....get some real HELP going) and take stock of the NEEDS! There are needy people who are doing it really tough. And most of these people do not fit the criteria for temporary housing(which is only allowed to the insured or to people who have a place to go on to in a specified time frame as it is ONLY temporary!!!!)

I am shocked and feel so sorry especially for the couple with the child living in a caravan with an awning that has cracked under the weight of the snow. For God's sake how the hell has the Government and this couple's Insurance agency allowed this situation to happen. I agree with Robyn, John Key needs to get his arse back here and sort out his own backyard! He should be ashamed of himself swanning off overseas when genuine people in his own country are suffering so much. I'd love to see him swop places with them for a week. It is disgusting that this family are living in these conditions. My heart goes out to them.

Thanks Campbell Live for allowing the rest of NZ to see just how poorly the National government is helping these tax paying kiwis survive in CHC unknowen zones. He is letting our country down with his spending cuts; he is currently on a one track mind to budget surplus. I would much rather be the Prime Minister remembered for empathy and compassion rather than the Prime Minister that was so focused on greed and a need for an accolade for what BUDGET SURPLUS!!! John key get home from London and sort out your backyard, you have allowed our own Kiwis to go cold with no basic needs and the rest of NZ is only just been shown this because of Campbell Live. Campbell live please help these people by helping them get there story out there more often. Thanks for showing us. Watch out John Key, Campbell maybe after your job he’s certainly got what it takes. Experience with down to earth Kiwis.

It beggars belief that our Prime Minister is spending his time talking with "her majesty" about cathedrals. I wonder if she is aware of the housing crisis in Chch?
