Peters still has not revealed which electorate he will stand in

New Zealand First Leader Winston Peters is about to launch an attack on parents who physically abuse their children.

The political veteran will take to the stand this afternoon, addressing New Zealand First supporters at the party's annual convention in Auckland.

Mr Peters will announce a policy targeting child-abusers in an attempt to steal the media limelight and up his party’s chances of electoral success come November’s election.

The plan involves repealing the so-called anti-smacking legislation because the party says it does not work.

It plans to replace with new laws which deal with child abusers.

Family First New Zealand is welcoming the policy announcement and says the party will benefit in the polls from the announcement.

National director Bob McCoskrie says “independent polls shows a significant voter block” for a political party which commits to amending the anti-smacking law.

Mr McCoskrie used a poll of 1000 people undertaken by the Curia Market Research in March.

He says 32 percent would be more likely to vote for a party that promised to amend the law to allow light correctional smacking. Just over half said it would not affect their vote.

“This election, NZ First could change to a law that is criminalising good parents and doing nothing to solve our unacceptable rates of child abuse,” says Mr McCoskrie.

NZ First has been lagging in the polls, barely making 2 percent recently. It is lower than the five percent party threshold needed.

Mr Peters still has not announced which electorate seat he will stand in.

it's against the law to smack a grown up so why should it not be the same for kids. smacking kids is against the law and rightly so. some of these women are big and strong enough to knock over a grown man, they don't smack with a feather. all the juvenile detentions are full of kids that have been smacked around at home. teach no violence is the answer.kids get cuddled don't end up in jail.

The law was put in place to stop serious acts of child abuse from being let off due of a piece of legislation in the Crimes Act. The new law as it stands takes away that loophole but gives police the discretion to lay charges (or not) if the allegation is not deemed serious. The right just refuse to believe it.

David, you need to dig a little deeper into your research. Corrolate the absence of fathers with povewrty indicator, and them cross tabulate to household income levels - the absence of a father figure (and earner) in the home is the core source of poverty - a fact that is taboo to discuss in many social science circles. Alien: Watch the DVD I highlighted in my first post - your numbers are way, way out. You can only smack for the purpose of the prevention of harm, not correction. Since preventing harm is itself an act of correction........see the problem? Holly: There has been no decrease in child deaths since the anti-smacking law was introuduced.

Soory alien you are wrong..the law actually states that even a light smack is illegal. The allowance light smack you mention is a directive from the PM to police and open to change at the whim of govts. its not just the prosecution that causes the damage..its families ripped apart while an investigation takes place. Cyps threaten to take children if mothers don't throw the fathers out while they investigate. Its also the power that kids now have over parents. The question should be..has this changed the statisitics? ... The answer is NO...Therefore is an unjustified intrusion into private family homes at the whim of of police.

and steve why is that? because no one has been charged for a light smack, one man was charged for punching his child in the face in front of an off duty police officer. This law change is not an anti smacking law, you are still allowed to smack your child on the bum with an open hand. This law was never expected to change abuse over night but to be a long term tool, one of many.

And does Winston think this law could be repealed because, both Labour and National voted for the law change... they rejected the private members bill put in by ACT's John Boscawen. Nice try but not good enough if you want to get back into Parliament Winston.

Poverty is NOT the cause of child abuse. Half the world live on WAY less than people on benefits get here in NZ, but they don't beat their children to death. I once knew a Pacific family struggling a lot to put food on their table, but they were always kind, considerate, well mannered people who loved their kids to bits - and they dodn't complain that life was tough and someone else should give them a handout. They worked very hard as cleaners to sacrifice for their family. "Poverty" is just an excuse, and it's HIGH time we stopped using it.

on one hand he says we need to protect the kids, then he says he wants the law changed so you can hit kids.
sorry I had liked winston but allowing kids to be smacked
or assaulted which ever you choose is no on in 2011.
the anti smacking law has stopped seeing kids smacked in public and that is great. how many dead kids this year alone
and that is with the law protecting kids, take it away and
we will be back to how it was ,tragic.

If Winston gets rid of a law that has done nothing for our children, he will get my vote!

Wow. It sounds like Winston Peters, unlike John "if parents are being prosecuted for a light smack, I'll change the law (but hasn't as yet)" Key, has paused to watch the DVD "My Mummy's a Criminal" http://www.protectgoodparents.org.nz/ detailing parents actually getting prosecuted for lightly smacking their children. NZ First just became relevant again - I am now going off to eat my hat.
