Charities are set to be the winners after a Kapiti family scooped a $15.6 million Lotto prize at the weekend.

The Waikanae family, who admit to have been living from week-to-week, won $15,114,000 in landing Powerball's first division as well as $500,000 as their share of Lotto's first division.

In a statement to The Dominion Post, the winner said a house was going to be top of their shopping list, but charities were also set to benefit from the windfall.

"We're long-time believers that you've got to give to get, so we've already worked out which charities we're going to give some money to, make sure that they have a good Christmas as well."

The winner said the rest of the money would be banked until they worked out what to do with it, but said they would stay in work.

Before hitting the jackpot the winner said they were concerned about the cost of Christmas.

"A week ago I didn't know how we were going to do Christmas this year, it really is a miracle come true."

The winning ticket was sold at Waikanae Beach Four Square.
