A Dunedin bar has failed in its attempt to get a special license to open over Easter, claiming it was the only suitable time to hold an earthquake fundraiser.
The Southern Break bar applied to the Dunedin District Licensing Authority for a liquor license to trade between midnight and 3am on Easter Sunday.
Management argued in favour of granting a special license, which would allow the Great King Street nightclub to hold a "Christchurch Earthquake Fundraiser".
But Police described the event as "contrived", saying while the proposal to hold a fundraiser for the victims of the Christchurch earthquake had merit, the event could be held at any other time within the bar's normal trading hours.
Dr Marion Poore from Public Health South also opposed the application, claiming the $1 donation per drink could promote the excessive consumption of alcohol. She also pointed out many hospital staff and health care providers take holidays over Easter to be with family, which could put pressure on the emergency department.
The Liquor Licencing Authority heard 12 applications from bars and cafes in the Dunedin area, requesting permission to trade between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. However all 12 requests were declined by the committee.
