Bob Parker with John Campbell

It's a beautiful evening in Christchurch tonight. There's no doubt the earthquakes will one day stop, and the city will be a great place to live again.

But there are still people here without sewerage. There are still people here who don't know what the future of their home is.

And there are still many people here waiting for insurance and EQC payouts.

What they need is leadership. What they seem to be getting is a deeply divided city council, divisions that appear to have come to a head over Christchurch City Council CEO Tony Marryatt.

Last month he was given a pay rise, taking him from $470,000 to $538,000 a year.

That's over $100,000 more than the Prime Minister earns, and for some city councillors, it seems to be the final straw.

Christchurch mayor Bob Parker talks to Campbell Live.

John I have already complained to our union and have emailed the Mayor asking for an explanation.Doubt whether I will even get a reply from the Mayor as it seems all his emails are well filtered/censored by his management team. They only reply with "Your message has been passed on to the Mayor", in other words put in file 13 being the deleted items folder.I know this as I have tried to contact the Mayor over earthquake issues for people in the eastern suburbs. Many of us still have badly broken homes, some still have no sewerage, the roads are appalling to drive over. They just pile on black top in road sink holes which then sink even further, this is just a total waste of money, instead of digging down to find the cause of sinkholes and doing the job properly in the first place. Then there is the waste of timber and labour proping up brick and block fences which will have to come down anyway, the list of stupid things being done in Christchurch is endless.Eastern Christchurch in effect is no better off than New Orleans after the Katrina flooding.Things down here are moving far too slowly, people are really fed up, the government needs to step in and get the suburbs particularly in the east and some hill areas repaired properly this includes fixing residents houses!!!

Jeff I totally accept what you say and I am sympathetic that you so were deliberately lied to by your employer but what's wrong with you all, why don't you or your union go public with these conflicting standards of fair play and utter deceit? Demand that HR management, the CEO and the Mayor give you an explanation.

Thank you for trying to get Parker the Silver Tongue to actually say anything at all - the man's ability to communicate in pre-determined dialogue is amazing. Why doesn't he get it? It's not about treating Employee Marryatt properly; it's about ridding the council of the corrupt and destructive force the man is. Pity you did not ask about the $80,000 handed to Felicity Price for a farcical survey - we now know they have blatantly lied about her association with council. But good effort John Campbell, Parker is an impossible man to get a straight answer from - but you got the nervous lip twitching going..

Mr Parker seems to have an inability to appreciate the extent of public dissatisfaction regarding dysfunctional dynamics in the Council. He has a leadership role and thus must bear some of the responsibility. Quoting from the official website “Local Government New Zealand” The role of Mayor is very important as the ceremonial head of the council providing leadership to other elected members……..The Mayor advocates on behalf of the community in an effort to ensure the views of the community are represented. In this role the mayor is often the spokesperson for the council.” If our Mayor was more reflective about his role in the string of highly publicised gaffes (including decisions made without sufficient consultation with all Councillors) this unpleasant situation may rapidly improve. It was unhelpful for the Mayor to dismiss Councillor’s concerns using the term “petty” in the interview. Councillors are our elected representatives and should be accorded more respect even if the Mayor disagrees with what they say. Some of these Councillors are putting forward the view of their constituents. It is only through mutual respect can true leadership arise.

As an employee of CHCH City Council we were asked by the mamagement not to push for any large pay increase this wage round(July 2011) because the council simply could not afford it due to the earthquakes and loss of revenue. The majority in our union agreed to this request and we received a 2%pay increase. For the CEO to be granted a 14% pay increase makes complete fools of all normal council employees including myself and our union delegates. In a word we were all lied to by our employer the CHCH CITY Council.

Why didn't you talk to Tim Carter to give a fair balance to your program. Mayor Parker at least admitted that the Councillors and Mayor that voted for the CEOs increase got it wrong, then he blamed it on the whole Council. Complicit Mayors and all powerful CEOs make it real difficult for Councils to fully represent their Communities best interests. Rather than have Commissioners appointed, prehaps a new election will let the people of Christchurch elect the Council and Mayor that they want. Let the people speak Bob.
