Protestors outside the Christchurch City Council building

Around 1000 protesters are gathering outside the Christchurch City Council building, angry over council chief executive Tony Marryatt's $68,000 pay rise and calling for him to be sacked.

Protestors also want the local body election to be brought forwards to April or May this year, in an attempt to rid Mayor Bob Parker as well.

Mr Marryatt said last Friday he would decline the pay rise and pay back what he has already received, but protestors are not buying it.

Christchurch residents are wondering what else goes on behind closed doors, expressing their “dissatisfied” and “disappointed” view of those at the top of the council

Anger is also spilling over of how Mr Parker dealt with the residential areas following last February’s major earthquake.

The organiser of the protest, Peter Lynch, does not expect the protest to get out of hand despite police being present for crowd control. It is expected to have wrapped up by 2pm.

It is no surprise that Nationals Local Govt Minister Nick Smith kicked for touch on meaningful CCC crisis action as we all know that Parker is Nationals man. This was demonstrated by John Keys 'cup of tea' style endorsement of Parker in the 2010 local govt elections (see http://www.voxy.co.nz/politics/pm-attending- bob-parker-function/5/59011.) I suggest a simple 3 point forward action plan. 1. The Crown observer report jointly to the Minister & a nominated rep of the protest group - including all draft reports & briefings! 2.Crown observer endorse implementation of Cr Yani Johanson's 10-point CCC way forward plan {see: http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/5658906/Johansons-way-forward-plan-impresses-Parker} 3. Crown back up the plan with a review under S. 254 of Local Govt Act using the plan & open govt principles as key terms of reference.(See: http://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/2002/0084/73.0/DLM174076.html#DLM174076)

Cherie I think you will find that the council remuneration committee declined the salary increase for Tony Marryatt Mayor Parker threatened to resign himself if Marryatt wasn't reappointed and given the salary increase - in fact it was the Mayor forcing the vote by voting himself and intimidating Jamie Gough that swung it through. From COUNCIL NOTES on Marryatt Pay Increase Vote: FOR Bob Parker, Ngaire Button, Aaron Keown, Jamie Gough, Sue Wells, Barry Corbett, and Claudia Reid voted in favour of the increase AGAINST Tim Carter, Glenn Livingstone, Sally Buck, Jimmy Chen, Helen Broughton and Yani Johanson voted against.

Only a 1000 people, I don't think so... I would estimate 2-3000...Cherie I Bet there would have been no protest today if Jim was voted in as ChCh Mayor 2010. Age of the Mayor is not relevant.. given that 'experience in the field', is what Christchurch needs..I never heard Churchill failed to keep up with the young for 5 years..in fact I seem to remember people were awed and inspired at the energy and dedication the man displayed.

@cherie he can't get out of it that easily yes he abstained yet in public Bob Parker repeatably took Marryatts side in saying his pay rise was justified Probably because it was in his(and these who supported it) best interests to say so. Anderston wouldn't have been up to it, but this isn't about playing favorites and turning a blind eye because the alternative is less favorable, everyone should be held accountable if needed regardless of what party they support.

The same quality's that make Bob Parker appealing for the job is the same thing that makes some people disappointed in him, so long as things are going well and no body bothers to dig below the surface that personality type does well. He did do very well on the social side no doubt about that.

Mr Parker did not vote for this Marriot fellow. He abstained. I think he is a great mayor. Imagin if we had OLD Anderton. How on earth would he, at 77 coped with a few hours sleep a night for a couple of weeks. Yes protest abpout Marriot but I think Parket has done a very good job in unprecidented times.

I should imagine that if Bob Parker were to arrange a protest against Peter Lynch then more than 1000 would attend.
