Conventional battery hen cages are going to be slowly phased out – but what will be used in their place?
In all likelihood, it will be what’s known as a colony system. That is larger cages, housing around 60 birds in each cage; with perching and scratching capabilities.
The poultry industry has been trialling the system for the last three years and says it is the best way forward.
Sounds like a win-win, right?
So why won’t those who tell us it’s a good system, let us in to see it?
Surely anything that is an improvement on battery caging is worth seeing and celebrating?
