A child has been flown to hospital with serious head injuries after two cars and a truck collided north of Wellington.
The crash happened on State Highway 1 just north of Peka Peka Rd, near Waikanae on the Kapiti Coast, about 11.20am, Inspector Paul Jermy told NZ Newswire.
A 10-year-old had been flown to Wellington Hospital and two others were taken to hospital by road, he said.
Two other people, who were not injured in the crash, were talking to police about what happened, Mr Jermy said.
The road was closed with diversions in place until about 2pm.
There were significant traffic delays, with the diversions crossing a couple of one lane bridges, Mr Jermy said.
There were calls for improvements to roads in the area after a fatal accident south of Waikanae during the Christmas holiday period at treacherous bend known as "death corner".
