A Buddhist monk has died after setting himself on fire in an ethnically Tibetan region of western China, reports said.

The incident took place in Sichuan province's Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, China's official Xinhua News Agency reported. It did not give further details.

The Free Tibet Network in London said Tsewang Norbu, 29, died after dousing himself with gasoline and setting himself on fire in Daofu county.

It said he shouted "Long live the Dalai Lama". China bans public veneration of the exiled Tibetan Buddhist leader, who remains intensely popular among Tibetans.

Remote Garze and other Tibetan parts of Sichuan have seen repeated outbreaks of unrest in recent years, often led by Buddhist monks angry with government restrictions on monastic life.

It was the second reported self-immolation by a monk this year.

In March, a 21-year-old monk set himself on fire near Aba also in Sichuan in an apparent protest against Chinese government rule over Tibet.

Maybe the news should also report the fact that China has invaded Tibet, and do not allow Tibetans to express their freedom and rights. Tibet is not part of China.
