The Christchurch City Council has voted unanimously to save the city’s Town Hall in a meeting this morning.
Councillors voted to pay the full rebuild cost of $127.5 million, despite an insurance payout of only $68.9 million.
While council staff initially recommended saving just the main auditorium to cut back on costs, that idea was rejected today by every councillor in sitting.
The entire complex will be saved under the recommendation of the Council’s Community, Recreation and Culture Committee.
However, today’s decision will not necessarily ensure the Town Hall’s future, as Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee could still potentially override the council’s vote.
